"But you used magic against me," the creature argued.

"That wasn't magic, those were just our elements," Maeve disagreed, drawing her blanket around herself. "Water for leadership, fire for, well, war. It's nothing to do with--"

"Excuse me," Veronica interrupted, still cradling the unconscious Bev. "This is all very informative, but I think we've lost sight of what's important here--you kicked my dog."

"I assumed you were agents of the mages who are about to destroy the natural Earth."

"So naturally," Veronica gritted, "you abducted us without warning, assaulted me, and smacked the hell out of Bev, who you won't stop calling your daughter. Not at all extremely creepy and weird."

"Because she is a child of nature," the elemental pressed on, "and I am the embodiment of nature for this provin--"

"Blah blah blah not hearing an apology in there, bro."

The elemental sighed tiredly. "I am not a bro. Perhaps we should settle this as the faerie courts do."

Veronica stood, making an enthusiastic fist. "What, a fight to the death? You, my gender-indeterminate large lump of lumbering landscape, are on."

You Kicked My Dog

Well, of course it's magic, Maeve, it's not basket-weaving. But that just goes to show what Maeve's dogmatic upbringing has led to: she's always been told that her ability to Command creatures--and, incidentally, inability to drown--wasn't magic so to her it isn't, and even six months into their exile she hasn't thought to question that.

Something the less upbrought Veronica would probably point out if she weren't busy picking a fight, as usual. To be fair, the last time she went up against a faerie it insisted on a fight to the removal from the mortal plane, so her conclusion isn't entirely unprecedented. Even though she probably proposes that to everyone.

I bent my prime directive with Saskquatchewan a little: unlike nearly every other character in the comic, it's not female. But it's not male either. It's rocks and bushes and dirt animated by an elemental so I didn't see any logic in forcing it to conform to a gender binary. Or anything else.
